Song for June 19

In Tennessee
email for an mp3

I like living in Nashville a lot. In many ways, it's a fantastic place to be.

Still, there are a lot of lousy drivers in Tennessee. We know it, everyone who visits knows it. It's talked about on the radio and the TV. Do something about it? Nah. We've got great roads, though. Almost supernatural funding for the highway department, while state parks and schools close for lack of cash. Must be something about the hills, I dunno.

Why, it's enough to make a guy satiric.

In Tennessee
(c) 2003 Mark Frey

Turn signals are forbidden
staying in your lane is frowned upon
sudden stops and swerves
earn extra points
the primo parking space is on the lawn

Oh, the roads we have are beautiful
'cause we stiff the schools, you see
that's just the way we drive it in Tennessee.

You don't need high-falutin' schoolin'
to operate a vehicle 'round here
just a 6-pack-a Miller High Life
and a cell phone plastered up to your ear

'Cause the roads we have are beautiful
when we stiff the schools, you see
that's just the way we like it in Tennessee.

When it rains, we drive like grannies
when it snows, hell-we go by horse
but 'till then we got our trusty rusty pickups--
held together by Earnhardt stickers, of course!

Oh, the roads we have are beautiful
'cause we stiff the schools, you see
that's just the way we drive it in Tennessee.
