I wrote this tune while playing with Riley. We arranged it in our usual proggish manner, and while it basically worked it was always a bit of a stretch. Later, Implied Trampoline learned a much more down-home version that I think fits the song a bit better. The rhythm section in this recording is from the tracks IT put down. They may show up in a more polished form some day after Tim, Bill, and Demus come visit Nashville.

So, like with 183, the tracks here span several years. The drums, bass, and guitar are from I think about 1999 or 2000, while the keys and vocals are brand-spanking new, as is the mix.

Separate Ways
(c) 1998 Mark Frey

A mile or so down the road past the schoolyard
in a yellow house lived my old friend
childhood summers with the world at our feet
I never thought that would end

but just like autumn leaves, people simply change
we grew up and grew apart
time and distance can lend a grand nostalgic haze
but they also build a wall around your heart

So now I realize that something's gone wrong
and the only real surprise is that I missed it for so long
It'll do no good wishing for yesterday
Guess we'd better go our separate ways

There's no one here left to blame
no betrayals to forgive
just two people who have nothing left to say
and unconnected lives they need to live

So now I realize a friendship has died
and the only question--could we have saved it if we'd tried?
It'll do no good wishing for yesterday
Guess we'd better go our separate ways

and through the years this pain will surely fade
watch it slowly disappear
I'll miss you
of course I will
but I won't wish you were here

So now I realize that nothing's really wrong
and the only real surprise is that it took me so long
It'll do no good wishing for yesterday
Guess we'd better go our separate ways
