I want to sing you a song
but nothing comes to mind
except ways of procrastinating
leaving me further and further behind

it's not a shortage of topics
or of melodies that's to blame
I've just got this tiny attention span
that's not going to win me much fame

cause I could write about springtime in Nashville
winter in WNY
the sushi shop on Division street
where you ought to never use a fork
but I end up surfing the internet
or watching foreign TV
Damon's going to send the Badger Squad
to scare some sense into me

I stare at a blank piece of paper
then at the blank computer screen
wondering if my desktop icons
would be better if bigger and green

my mind is wandering everywhere
but the places I need it to go
I think about volcanos in Iceland
instead of letting ideas flow

cause I could write a line about Riley
or people who irritate me
or be like Zappa and wonder aloud
what it's like to hurt when you pee
but I end up getting a Guinness
and once again cleaning my desk
if I don't do the dishes 'till I'm done with this tune
it's gonna get pretty grotesque

perfect opening lines
never seem to follow through
like Casey at the keyboard striking out stanzas
that never ever ring true

cause I could write about living in hope
of getting the perfect job
video game addictions
analysis of the B movie Blob
but I end up reading the jacket
of an album from some years ago
or browsing the online journals
of people I don't even know
